Encountering a motor vehicle accident is not only something that one would rather not have but also disappointing and frustrating.
What needs to be done right after the accident is unknown by many and can be daunting.
If you have suffered injuries, there is the need to seek medical help. If any of your passengers have suffered injuries, you will need to arrange for their medical assistance.
After the above has been taken care of, you will need to notify the authorities, the police. You also need to notify your insurance company.
You will need the police for them to determine the circumstances of the accident. They will also issue a “police report”, which you will need for the insurance claim process.
Every driver/vehicle owner needs to understand the full terms and conditions of their insurance policy, as detailed on the policy documents. You can only do this by actually reading the document, paying special attention to the small print.
The insurance company will need you to complete an insurance claim form or application, with details of the accident.
The insurance company will also need to see three quotations indicating the estimated cost of repair for the damaged areas. This is only required to determine the reasonableness of the stated cost.
Most insurance companies have what they call “recommended or preferred repairers”.
While you can follow this and choose from the list, you are NOT obliged to. The choice of repairer is entirely yours, irrespective of the cost.
The rationale is that :
>You are the owner of the vehicle.
>You are the one who pays the required premiums.
>You are also the one who chose the insurance company.
For as long as you have been paying the premiums and adhering to the terms and conditions as detailed in the agreement, the insurance company will have to perform their part of the contract, paying for repairs after an accident.
The above applies, even if you choose a repairer not listed on their list.
Of course, you should be well informed of the repairers available and of what to look out for.
